Top Tips for the Pre-construction Phase

24th April 2017

Many of you are attending the Grand Designs Live Show to find out the latest trends for the home as well as gaining inspiration for your very own project. Whilst anticipating the end product is well – It’s important to think about the pre-construction.

It’s great having a vision of your project, knowing where to start can be the tricky part. Maybe you need planning permission to extend parts of your home or find a team to carry out the construction process.

If you are building a house or extension you have legal responsibilities. Such as being responsible for health and safety on your site to dealing with local planning authority and building regulations. This time period before the construction activities beginning is vital to the success of a project.

Here are some important tips for Site Selection and Pre-Construction Preparation

Site Selection

Once determined your general location, choosing the right site is next. It must be accessible and have enough room for your building, parking area, loading and shipping or any other required space. It’s important to be able to bring all elements to the building.

Pre-Construction Preparation

Most construction projects follow a similar path once the site is selected. Here’s what you can expect:

Needs assessment: This outlines all the specific objectives of a particular project e.g. type of building, needed space and utilities.

Site Survey: A Site Survey is required to make sure that sight is suitable for the project, as well as to make sure the building can be constructed to all local codes and ordinances.

Permission: If Planning Permission is required, Planning Applications must be submitted to the council.

Building Design: Rough elevations, the needs assessment and the site survey integrated into the final building design.
